Bou-Said: The Elections Held by the Interim Administration Are a Farce to Evade International Commitments
Dr. Haissam Bou-Said, the High Representative of the International Human Rights Council, accredited by the United Nations with special status under ECOSOC and Head of its Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, described today’s elections as a political farce orchestrated by the interim authority to serve future goals, primarily to evade international obligations endorsed by the UN Security Council under what is being labeled as “local sovereignty.”
He pointed out that the election of 6,000 individuals to form local electoral bodies for the purpose of selecting 140 members, who were already pre-designated by the same authority and appointed directly by the head of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, in addition to the appointment of 70 more deputies by the head of the interim administration, turns the entire process into a de facto appointment rather than a democratic election.
Dr. Bou-Said concluded that such pseudo-parliaments do not exist in any free state, as they do not represent genuine public opinion but rather a superficial façade for a controlled reality, which may well be the intended outcome at the local level.
